We’re extremely excited to announce the Build The World with Dolby.io Hackathon! Unique to our global hackathon, everyone will have an opportunity to win. We’ve lined up over 200 prizes for the main event and side quest challenges. Developers and creators will have the opportunity to compete for a prize pool valued at over $25,000 to build spectacular and innovative hybrid audio and video conference experiences. A few lucky winners will also get a unique opportunity to have their winning projects featured on Meet.Dolby.io a showcase website.
Our theme is in recognition of how the global lockdown brought on by the pandemic has transformed our concept of place into hybrid meta-spaces.
When conceiving of this hackathon, we knew the events of the last 18-months were truly a shared experience for everyone on an unprecedented global scale. Acknowledging after the initial lockdown, how our concept of how we work, play, and collaborate changed. A whole new class of communication applications started to appear. We wanted to create a theme that would truly challenge our hackathon participants to solve our modern, yet “new normal” task of combining real-world and virtual communications into more thoughtful and engaging experiences.
“I think well-designed apps work and act like the natural world in which we live. Instead of digging through emails and calendars for a meeting id or link, I wish I could just tell you to meet me on the 11th floor or down the street at Philz coffee. Just like in the real world, I want each of these experiences to feel unique and appropriate for the work at hand or the mood of the interaction even when it is online.”
Jayson DeLancey, Manager Developer Relations, Dolby.io

Hackathons provide great feedback on software we build, and we are really interested in how our hackathon participants will use our APIs; The primary goal for this hackathon will be to have software developers build unique projects with our Communications APIs that will showcase their innovative concepts, developer skills and unique take on our theme.
At most hackathons, participants build a project and a few winners receive a prize. For most, that experience is anti-climatic. We want to celebrate the winners with something more tangible; the bragging rights to having your winning project featured by Dolby.io.
We’ve developed Meet.Dolby.io as a website for the developer community and Dolby’s partners to showcase demos of all levels of complexity. That might be a classroom app or a watercooler at a Startup. We want to see how hackathon participants will interpret this geospatial context of staking claim to a location on the map; then articulating that location into better ways to represent that space, and communicate with people in real-time.
We’re also “dogfooding” our own ideas around what it means to be in a virtual hackathon. In addition to inviting developers to develop their original ideas into formal project submissions to compete for the grand prizes; We also want to emulate some of the common in-person hackathon experiences virtually. We’ll be offering technical workshops, office hours, and weekly Side Quest challenges as ways to elevate the experience. These Side Quests are fun challenges to reward you for participating in our event. Hackathon participants can win cool swag and prizes as they prepare your app for our submission deadline on November 29th.
