SUMMARY

Haivision integrates Haivision StreamHub and the Haivision Makito encoder with the Dolby Millicast real-time streaming service.

I have dedicated the majority of my career to live streaming, and have always enjoyed collaborating with industry colleagues to solve the ever-evolving needs of customers in the broadcast and streaming industries.

A good example of this collaboration is Dolby Millicast joining the SRT Alliance in 2023, adding SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) as a supported protocol for mission-critical, real-time video contribution from software and hardware encoders. This is serendipitous as, prior to Millicast, I worked at Wowza and partnered with Haivision to originally launch the SRT Alliance in 2017. Within those six years SRT has garnered near-universal support within the broadcast and streaming industries, with over 600 solution and service providers joining the SRT Alliance.

Now, I am proud to announce that we have collaborated with Haivision once again to integrate Haivision StreamHub and the Haivision Makito encoder with the Dolby Millicast real-time streaming service.

StreamHub enables field-based camera operators and live broadcast producers to share live video contribution and return feeds over mobile and IP networks. This is also serendipitous as Haivision built StreamHub from technology developed from an acquisition that I was also involved with prior to Millicast with my colleague Laurent Cogne (now the Product Manager for StreamHub).

The integration with Dolby Millicast now allows StreamHub users to distribute these live video feeds over WebRTC for real-time sub-second delivery natively within any web browser or mobile device. In a matter of seconds you can now send return video and audio back to field without requiring an expert on-site to deploy or manage a hardware or software-based decoder device, reducing cost and improving distribution.

Haivsion Streamhub dashboard and live streams

Millicast was originally founded to help broadcasters expand the reach of their live broadcast feeds to the web browser and mobile devices with sub-second glass-to-glass latency, primarily for live remote production, post-production and broadcast monitoring use cases. However, the need for real-time video keeps expanding to new use cases, including situational awareness for first responders, emergency response, border control, surveillance, autonomous vehicles and drones. This integration can now pave the way for additional integrations with Haivision Hub 360 and Command 360.

Haivision relies on its Makito X4 to reliably encode live video and audio from remote locations in the field. Dolby Millicast also includes SRT support for the Makito X4, which offers ultra-low latency, 4K video encoding built to address the most demanding broadcast applications, including live sports, live events and live streaming.

Makito X4 Video encoder

The Makito supports 4K, HD, and SD at up to full 2160p50/60 4K UHD or 1080p50/60 HD video sources with 4:2:2 10-bit H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC compression up to eight channels of digital audio and includes native support for SRT. With both SDI and HDMI inputs, users have the flexibility of working with different video sources and can leverage ultra-low latency encoding at up to 4K UHDp60.
