Elias Puurunen, founder of Tractus Events, smiles while recalling his first experience with the Dolby.io platform in August of 2021: “I remember calling my wife into the room: ‘Look at this! We built this in a day!’”
At the time, Elias and his team at Tractus wanted to integrate webinar capabilities into their events platform. Tractus began as an API for tracking event attendance at trade shows, but they knew that voice and video chat could give them more ways to engage users.
Today Tractus is a full-service hybrid and virtual events platform – powered by Dolby.io Communications APIs – that services a variety of customers, including major healthcare companies, large corporations, non-profits, and environmental groups.
Building for the future
When the 2020 global lockdown arrived, Elias and his team were already building out a virtual events platform. With strong expertise in audiovisual event production, Tractus set out to build their own communications and streaming infrastructure to support their rapidly growing customer base.
Tractus quickly discovered they were spending more time supporting the various infrastructure they had built, and were often pulled into navigating complexities of the real-time communications world instead of what they really wanted to focus on: their customers.
“We didn’t want to be just another events platform. We weren’t just producing events, we were offering video post-production, speaker coaching, rehearsals, dedicated support, full analytics – really everything to ensure the success of our clients.”
The Tractus team resolved to find a voice and video chat provider, and quickly identified their mission critical musts:
- Scalability for thousands of virtual attendees
- Straightforward and easy-to-use recording capabilities
- Undeniable audio quality
Elias evaluated several types of voice and video chat solutions, but few seemed to meet all of the requirements.
“Even when we found something that looked good, we’d get to the Hello World stage only to learn that we needed to do some other clunky implementation to solve our problem in production. And then the vendor would push an update to the API and the whole thing would break.”
A Day Well Spent
When they started testing Dolby.io in August of 2021, Elias was amazed to find that he had a video prototype up and running within 24 hours. He was thrilled that Tractus could go live with a production integration less than a month later – and that integration has only needed minimal upkeep since.
Now that they had found the communications platform they needed, Tractus could take several of their servers dedicated to the previous infrastructure entirely offline, freeing up precious developer hours and operational budget, practically overnight.
“The audio quality is great, and the ease-of-use for developers is incredible. Because of Dolby.io we don’t need a specialized WebRTC developer – our devs can just read the docs, and boom: we’ve got audio and video streaming in the browser.”
