Dolby Millicast has joined the SRT Alliance, adding SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) as a supported protocol for mission-critical, real-time video contribution from software and hardware encoders.
SRT is a video streaming transport protocol and technology stack designed to connect two endpoints for the purposes of delivering low latency video and other media streams across any network including unstable networks such as the public internet.
Dolby acquired Millicast in 2022 and built the Dolby Millicast Real-Time Streaming platform, adding support for SRT ingest to reduce the latency from professional encoders. Another key benefit of SRT is the support of newer codecs and features that pave the way for us to add HDR and Dolby Vision to our streaming workflows. Our customers include National Broadcasters and top Hollywood studios that use Dolby Millicast to power their live REMI and remote post-production products. SRT gives our customers a Secure Reliable Transport protocol to power their live broadcast feeds to remote monitors and multiviewers.
Ryan Jespersen, Director of Product Strategy, dolby.io.
Haivision originally developed SRT in 2013 to enable simple low latency video connectivity over the public internet between its products, specifically for its Makito ultra-low latency series of video encoders. SRT has garnered near-universal support within the broadcast and streaming industries, with over 600 solution and service providers joining the SRT Alliance within six years.
SRT continues to influence the way that the world is streaming video. Now 600 vendors strong, the SRT Alliance continues to champion the adoption of SRT as the gold standard that global streaming, technology, and broadcast organizations trust for their complete broadcast workflows.
Pablo Hesse, VP of Strategic Initiatives, Haivision
Dolby Millicast includes SRT support for the Makito X4, an ultra-low latency, 4K video encoder built to address the most demanding broadcast applications, including live sports, live events and live streaming. The Makito X4 can encode 4K, HD, and SD at up to full 2160p50/60 4K UHD or 1080p50/60 HD video sources with 4:2:2 10-bit H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC compression up to eight channels of digital audio and includes native support for SRT. With both SDI and HDMI inputs, users have the flexibility of working with different video sources and can leverage ultra-low latency encoding at up to 4K UHDp60.

About the SRT Alliance
Founded by Haivision, the SRT Alliance is a collaborative community of industry leaders and developers striving to achieve lower latency internet video transport by continuously improving SRT, an open-source video transport protocol and technology stack. Originally developed and pioneered by Haivision, SRT optimizes streaming performance across unpredictable networks with secure streams and easy firewall traversal, bringing the best quality live video over the worst networks. Haivision was awarded an Emmy® for Technology and Engineering from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for developing the SRT protocol.
